There are two possible questions here: (1) is it sinful to have same-sex attractions and (2) is it sinful to participate in homosexual activities. Regarding the first question, being tempted is not a sin. Indeed, Jesus himself was tempted (Matthew 4:1). The root problem is that same-sex attraction is, according to the Bible, an attraction to something that God has forbidden. We trust that scripture has it right regarding our very natures being so infected by sin that what is evil often looks good to us. We understand and empathize with those who struggle against temptation and while we all do not have the same temptations, we all nonetheless have them. We understand that many people for a variety of reasons are simply not attracted to members of the opposite sex. The causes of same-sex attraction are still currently in discussion but regardless of the reasons, the temptation is real. We recognize that people cannot often control how they feel but we must not let that cloud the reality that all people can control what they do with those feelings (1 Peter 1:5-8). We must all do our best to resist temptation in whatever form that looks like in our lives (Ephesians 6:13). Regarding the second question, the answer is more straightforward, yes, it is sinful to participate in homosexual activities (Romans 1:26-27). Recognize that homosexual behavior will not make you any more guilty than greed, lust, pride, or adultery. We all are lost without Christ. But when we give our lives to Jesus, he gives us a new nature (2 Corinthians 5:17). We just hope that all people choose a new life in Jesus and reject their old life of sin. It doesn’t matter how we were born for Christ calls us all to be born again (John 3:7).
